Educate, Report, Protect
This group is for responsible hobbyists devoted to:
- Educating the public about invasive invertebrate species in their local environment, as well as responsible invertebrate keeping practices to prevent release & escape of non-native species
- Educating the public about other practices that may contribute to the spread of invasives (ie. moving firewood)
- Reporting sightings of invasive invertebrate species spotted during field observations to the proper environmental protection authorities
- Participating in, when possible, efforts to study, identify, and control invasive invertebrate populations
- Exercising responsible invertebrate keeping practices, including abiding by state & federal laws restricting exotic species and observing the proper precautions to avoid introducing non-native species into the wild
These practices are vital not only to protect native biodiversity, but also to protect the future of our hobby. Some restrictions on invertebrate species are in place due to invasive populations established via the release or escape of exotic pets. This has become such a problem that new legislation is constantly being drafted to further restrict the number of species available in the hobby even among responsible keepers.
If you love keeping invertebrates and respect local biodiversity, invasive species should be a prominent concern.
