Protecting wild populations via captive breeding
This group is for proponents of captive breeding for the sake of species conservation. Many invertebrates are becoming scarce in the wild due to over-collection, which when paired with habitat loss and other factors may lead to the extinction of numerous species. One fine example is the emperor scorpion, which has listed as threatened by CITES since 1995 but is still collected on a massive scale for the pet industry.
If you love invertebrates and are outraged that they are being depleted in the wild for the sake of OUR hobby, this is the group for you. Share information and tips for captive breeding of all invertebrates (I know the group says arachnids, but this is open to all species), discuss news and changes in conservation status, or advertise your captive bred stock. If we want to keep our hobby going, we MUST consider the conservation of the species we know and love.
