I recently witnessed the birth of about 40 hissing cockroaches from one of my hissers, start-to-finish and was curious about a few things that I can't seem to find much information on.
One: Is it unusual, or typical for a female hisser to give birth upside-down?
Two: Does a cockroach experience contractions? It seemed my mommy hisser was tensing and twitching frequently.
Three: What is the fluid that comes out after the nymphs are born? Obviously it carries some sort of nutritional properties, as the nymphs greedily gobbled it up as soon as it was expelled. The mother as well. :P Is it a glandular fluid similar to
the Pacific beetle roach/diploptera punctata's womb lining secretion which keeps baby roaches sustained in the womb?
Thanks for any help, I have a constant thirst for cockroach knowledge and while I feel some of the questions I ask may sound stupid, I try to remind myself of what my 2nd grade teacher once told me; that there is no such thing as a stupid question... :)
