After reading that gromphadorhina portentosa actually translates to "portentous sow's snout", I got curious as to what the names of other roaches translate to! Craniifer, oblongonata, etc... does anyone know or does anyone know where I could find out? Online translators don't offer much :P

Where'd you read that? gromphado is sow's snout, rhina is horn so the genus is "snout horn"

oblongonota is pretty easy= oblong + notum

In a book called The Compleat Cockroach (not misspelled). I know nothing about Latin when it comes to how to form sentences or how to separate the words to find their meanings, despite how easy it may be to others. :P

portentosa would be wonderful or colossal which would make it "wonderful snout horn". The word portentous also means wonderful in English but is more often used in relation to a sign of foreboding which is an entirely different meaning. The notum is the dorsal portion of the insects thorax and refers to the shape of the front of the pronotum on G. oblongonota.

This list is more geared toward T's, but still interesting none-the-less.
