I need a quick fix to keep ants out of my tarantula tanks!!  I have already changed the substrate, but I have no other place to move the tanks to!!  I have no cash to change the lids...so do you guys have any suggestions of what to put around the tanks to keep them away????  (I used dish soap, but it dries too quickly!!)

I used to lay the news paper between the tank and lid(or screen) to keep the ants and the other bugs away. or you could find the rubber band that smells bad like..not sure correct explanation..but smells like chemical..that kind of rubber band.. Place on your tank. like..you put the band on the around of tank.

Another and best way...is cleaning the place(or room). Ants are attracting by the smell of food especially sweet and sugary kind of food. so clean your place to keep them away and attracting them anymore, and if you have food that is left over, you must seal it completely. and use chemical killer of those bugs. spray is fine for the time you see it, but evaporate so get a better one or make one would be fine too. ants or the other insects are hardly survive after they be touched by toothpaste or mouth-washer. so get them and mix water a bit for lower the density(or thickness) and spray couple of times to where ants are mostly seen. But don't spray too much. while it dries out, it might leave the marks of the liquid.

hope it could help you out.

Great suggestions!!!  I will definitely try the newspaper and mouthwash tricks!  The place is very clean, and where they are kept is never used for food or anything edible..  The apartment we live in has this problem every year, and it just seems to get worse.  My husband and I will be moving to another city in the next few months, so hopefully this will be the last year we have to deal with these uninvited guests!

I have also heard that a line of baby powder around each tank makes a barrier against the tank, breaking whatever line they had. There may be a few stragglers left in the tank though.

i would highly suggesting trying to figure out what species you saw. if it is argentine ants you need to go into eternal vigilance mode :/

argentine ants were designed by the devil that hates hobby bugs.  they are attracted to all human edibles and a range of stuff we wouldn't eat.  they specialize in killing other bugs and reducing them to travel size bits

they have done me $1,000-$2000 ~USD2010 in bug damage over the last 7 years (since i have been seriously keeping bugs)
love my locals

Vaseline (100% petroleum jelly) works well, but some ants  just like to taste all kinds of weird things or walk over them. If that is the case then use "Tarro", which is an economic ant bait killer; basically a mixture of sugar  water and borax. I use a bottle cap to place a few drops of tarro, but be sure to keep you bait well supplied until the invaders stop comming. About a week will do.

Good luck.

I haven't seen them in a while, so I don't think they were the kind of ants you had issues with.  I will definitely keep an eye on the tanks, and I appreciate the warning!  Any feedback is always a good thing, and could save a tarantula or 2....  I am just sorry that you had to lose your bugs to be able to pass on the info...

Funny- My manager was recommending that to me when HER manager came in and said the same thing without fully hearing our conversation!  From what I am told though, they only sell the powder form here that we have to mix ourselves...and I heard its not as effective.
Have you had experience with it in this form?
