Slow Spell For IG? :( +
Posted On 01/25/2010 17:32:27 by CockroachMonster

Seems like myself and others submitting photos are getting fewer and fewer views/comments than ever before. I was really hoping that this site would blossom and activity would skyrocket as it grew into a larger community. I had really high hopes that it would be more LIKE a community, where people talk and keep social with others who share their interest, photos, words and art. What happened?

In other news, my g. portentosa gave birth to 46 babies a few days ago, and just yesterday, my g. oblongonata gave birth to almost as many. I now have about 140 hissing cockroaches alone :) And about 50+ of all the other 15 species, of which are also blossoming forth and molting more than I've ever seen them before... new Harlequins, g. lurida and goldies popping up left and right!

Anyone else out there having a sudden baby explosion? Is it the time of year, or what? I don't think the temperature in the house has changed, or anything else that might stimulate such sudden activity.

I also had a question: In all my cockroach books and the entomology sites I'm on, I can't seem to find information about the fluid that comes out of the mother roach after birthing her young. I just posted a photo of the occurance to the gallery and it should still be on the first page or two. The baby hissers devoured the fluid as soon as they were born and the air in their abdomen was released from pushing through the embryonic sac.

I know I post less to bug, bird, and general wildlife sites in winter, even though I'm not in the field and theoretically have more time, because w/o being in the field there's less excitement that I want to post and photograph. In the spring and summer, and early fall, there's so much going on that I love writing about it and hearing about other peoples' critters and experiences.

I was thinking the same thing as I posted three images just now :-)  Still very cold in the U.S. Northeast, but adult lady beetles have been out during the sunnier days. I can't wait till spring so I can collect their eggs and larvae and have a thriving ladybug community in my house again!

ive noticed participation is down a bit, when i first joined about 6 monthes ago it was more active with posts and such, i see many ppl online each day but not as many new posts. i wish the activity here was like that over at reptilegeeks. ive aquired a new P. imperator a few weeks ago and put it in with my old emperor to try out a communal set-up, both are still sub-adult and everything seems to be going well. i got a new california kingsnake for christmas, not my first reptile but the first one ive owned in over 10 years. I caught one of my baby A. gigas millipedes mid-molt a few days ago, that was awsome to see. as far as babies i think one of my V. caralinianus scorpions is gravid and i expect to have some babies soon. all of my other animals seem to be doing good, including my one-eyed fire belly toad and my retarded fire belly, who always turns in circles and leans a little to one side.
