Can be done/ Should be done
Posted On 12/17/2009 01:01:44 by rasputinsane

The following images are of what can be done - you must ask yourself if it should be done and weigh that against your husbandry techniques with your animals. If your husbandry falls under what can be done then you should...consider how you should be kept. Have a nice day.

Looking at these photos I am greatly disturbed, not by the
images they hold but by the ignorance of the person who posted them. Coming
from a farming background, I may have more insight into the farming techniques
featured in the pictures posted here and I’m more than willing to point them
out. In the world today everything is done for a purpose. Large scale farms
(and they are FARMS, no pets are here) have one sole purpose: to feed the human
population. The methods conveyed in these photos show just that. If you look
closer, which I doubt the publisher of this blog didn’t do, you can see that
the animals are clean and well fed. You don’t see any ribs showing in the pigs or
cattle, nor are they covered in their own filth.  The chickens and the turkeys, of which I’m not
as familiar with, are also clean and appear to be well fed as well. I will
acknowledge the missing feathers of the turkeys, but that is a result of them
living together and establishing dominance between each other, which is their nature
and happens in smaller scale farms as well as large scale.

Also, you can see equipment in these operations put there to
keep the animals comfortable in several of the pictures. The fan in the turkey
house keep the animals cool, and although there appears to only be one fan, the
side of the building are obviously open, which creates a breeze that cools the
interior of the barn, which is the same in the pig barn as well. Also in the
pig barn you see pipes running from the ceiling to metal boxes on the floor.
These are automatic watering systems, which keep a constant flow of clean cool
water to the animals. These would also be present in the turkey and chicken
barns as well as the cattle pens, but have been conveniently been left out of
the pictures, probably in an attempt to make the conditions look more dire than
they actually are.

From this I hope I have gotten the point across that
although the pictures convey animals in dire conditions, this is far from the
case, and in the case of these pictures I can’t find anything wrong being done.  I’m sure rasputinsane as well as many others
can quickly go to youtube and find photos and videos of farms that truly are
disturbing in their operations, but I say this, there are farms that don’t follow
the rules, and that abuse neglect the animals they raise, but they are in a
staggering MINORITY of farms that do so. It is truly sad that people judge the
large scale farms solely by the farms that fail. From living on and around
farms the vast majority of my life, I have seen farmers used and abused by the
media and ill informed people on the internet, and I find it frustrating to say
the least that someone who doesn’t know what they’re talking about can sway so
many people on an issue they themselves know very little about. To compare
farmers, the people who feed you each and every day whether you realize it or
not, to criminals who intentionally steal and hurt, to me is about as big of an
insult as anyone can make. Farmers are just trying to make a living and help
feed the world, and the vast majority of them don’t deserve half the grief the
general population throws upon them.

Rasputinsane, you may not be a half bad person to hang out
with, I really don’t know, but I disagree with this post greatly. Whatever caused
you to post this must have disturbed you greatly, I can see that. You may have
read the forum post about the raid of the pet company in Texas that I did, and I
share your horror if that’s the case, it truly did disgust me as well. But to
take it out on people who had nothing to do with it is irresponsible at the
least. If this in fact wasn’t the reason you posted this, I hope that you do
your homework before posting in the future.
And if you did it just to do it, which I really hope you didn’t do (it
doesn’t appear like you did), this is not the place to do it by any means, so
quit it. I interpreted this website to be a useful reference in finding and
raising beloved insects and arachnids, and not a target to throw ones opinions
at.
