I seem to be peeking in on my roaches a lot lately to find that they're performing quite the fascinating little mating dance, particularly my orientals, dubia, and orange heads. I've never heard anyone talk about this before, so I thought I'd share, as I, for one, find it adorable.
First, the male lightly flaps his wings rhythmatically, barely moving, more like a pulse... whilst facing the female. Usually she will turn around, but when she doesn't, he faces her, and raises his wings as high as they will go. Which is surprisingly high... at least, to me, since I never see them flap their wings at all, normally. He will do a little dance until she finally turns around, and then he turns around and the really amazing part - he lifts his wings high, backs up under her, as the female licks his abdomen until her head reaches the base of his wings... and then the male very rapidly takes advantage of the situation by angling his abdomen up into her, and once they're attached, they turn and face away from each other.
If this ACTUALLY has yet to be documented anywhere yet, I'm one proud roach mommy. I hope this information serves some good for someone wanting to learn more about roaches. I certainly found it amazing to watch... nothing like playing peeping tom with your roach colony lol.
